As you know, after you came with Carolena to Brazil tripled or quadrupled the amount of studio sisters here. What advice would you give to this new generation?
Teaching to such a large and enthusiastic group in Brazil was quite an experience. I’m delighted by the enthusiasm for ATS® that we see in South America. My advice for the new Sister Studios would be to continue working on the fundamentals of the dance through workshops, online lessons and reviewing the DVDs as much as possible. We’re never too good to work on the basics and the stronger our foundation is, the more beautiful and enjoyable our dance will be.
You are the director of FCBD education program, can you tell us more about it?
This year I have taken over administration of all aspects of Tribal Pura International, including the Sister Studio Continuing Education Program and Advanced Teacher Training, as well as continuing to be the contact person for organizing Tribal Pura, General Skills and Teacher Training workshops around the globe, as well as our two new certification courses, “Technique for Teachers” and “Perfecting Performance”. These new workshops are designed for dancers who have already completed Teacher Training.
Sister Studios who are enrolled in, or interested in, the Continuing Education program can now direct all questions about the program to me at Megha@fcbd.com. I will also be reviewing the evidence of SSCE workshops and private lessons for re-certification in the program.
Can you tell more about continuing education program?
The Sister Studio Continuing Education program is an optional program that anyone who has elected to become a Sister Studio can participate in. It is a way for dedicated students to maintain their skill levels while collecting certificates for attending approved workshops with SSCE eligible teachers and private lessons with myself and Carolena. There is a $75US registration fee for each year that you sign up and you get an enhanced listing on the Sister Studio page of www.fcbd.com which shows that you are actively participating in continuing education. This allows potential students to see that you are actively polishing your skills and allows us to publicly acknowledge you for doing so. The annual requirements for the program are 10 hours of SSCE approved workshops or classes, including at least one hour of private instruction with Carolena or myself either in person of through Skype or PowHow.
Kae will come this year to Brazil and three works are approved for the SSCE, how we can complete the hour we need for recertification program?
The one hour of private instruction can be completed by Skype or PowHow with Carolena or myself.
When you see a troupe dancing what you expect to see? Technique? Variations movements?
Mostly I hope to see joy. As a teacher I can’t help but notice technique, and I’m always thrilled by great posture and clean lines. But mostly, I expect to see the joy of the dance and a sense of cooperation. I want to see dancers who look confident, empowered and happy actively creating something vibrant on the stage.
Can you tell about your work "Indian Temple" in ATS Homecoming? And how can we use it in our ATS.
The Indian Temple Dance Poses for Stretching and Dancing workshop is one that is very dear to my heart. The concept of the class was based on my love of classical Indian art and dance, combined with my excitement at discovering temple dance poses at the end of the Woman Power Workout DVD produced by FatChanceBellyDance® and Karen Andes. The workshop itself focuses on flowing gently between poses inspired by Indian temple carvings depicting the temple dancers who would dance for the deities. There is also an Indian Temple Poses choreography that Devyani created many years ago that we still love to perform. It combines some of the same postures from the workshop with the existing gratitude meditation that we perform at the beginning of every class. It has been referred to as the extended puja for quite some time.
How is dance with Devyani in ATS Homecoming 2016?
Dancing with Devyani again at Homecoming was such a rewarding experience. We hadn’t all danced together for two years. We were together as a troupe in Birmingham for 10 years before I moved to Texas so dancing with them felt totally familiar and solid. It truly was a “Homecoming” experience in more ways than one.
What is the most important principle in the ATS for you?
This is a tough question. I think the joy of feeling empowered is the core of the ATS® dance experience for me. In order to get there, we have to become confident in our abilities and so comfortable with the technique of the dance that we don’t consciously think about it while we’re dancing. The sense of community and trust is also vitally important. We can only achieve these things through being committed, humble and vulnerable. There are so many factors involved that it’s hard for me to pin down one “most important” principle.
In Brazil, we are a beginner community which your advice for us?
As a beginner community my advice would be to stay committed and try to find the joy in dancing the basic steps and formations. Don’t rush to do all the new steps or come up with new ideas. Stay connected to the mothership and keep exploring the beauty of the foundations of our dance form and this amazing global community.

Em suas palavras: ensinar a um grupo tão grande e entusiasmado como no Brasil foi uma grande experiência. Fiquei encantada com o entusiasmo que vimos na América do Sul. Meu conselho para as novas Sister Studios seria a de continuar a trabalhar sobre os fundamentos da dança através de workshops, aulas on-line e rever os DVDs, tanto quanto possível. Nós nunca seremos boas demais para trabalhar sobre os conceitos básicos e os fundamentos de nossa dança, assim mais bonita e agradável ela será.

Questionada sobre o que gosta de ver em uma performance, Megha diz: Espero ver alegria. Como professora, eu não posso ajudar, mas um aviso sobre a técnica... sempre me emociona ver uma linda postura e linhas limpas. Mas, principalmente, espero ver a alegria da dança e um senso de cooperação. Quero ver dançarinos seguros, confiantes, alegres, ativamente criando algo vibrante no palco.
Megha está desenvolvendo um workshop, inclusive fiz a oficina sobre Poses Indianas em San Francisco, questionada sobre o tema ela responde: Para Alongamento e oficina de dança é um tema muito querido. O conceito da classe foi baseada em meu amor pela arte indiana clássica e a dança, combinada com a minha emoção ao descobrir a dança de templo e o final do DVD Poderoso Exercício Feminino produzida por FatChanceBellyDance® e Karen Andes. O workshop em si incide sobre o fluir suavemente entre poses inspiradas em esculturas do templo indiana que descreve os dançarinos do templo que iria dançar para as divindades. Há também uma coreografia criada anos atrás pelo Devyani sobre as Poses de Templo Indiano que nós ainda amamos executar. Ele combina algumas das mesmas posturas da oficina com a meditação de gratidão existente que realizamos no início de cada aula. Aquilo que tem sido referido como o Puja.
Sobre dançar com o Devyani no ATS Homecoming 2016; Foi uma experiência tão gratificante. Havia dois anos que não dançavamos juntas. Nós estávamos juntas como uma trupe em Birmingham por 10 anos antes de me mudar para o Texas, assim sendo dançar com todas elas soa familiar e sólido. Foi realmente uma experiência de "Homecoming" de diversas maneiras.
Questionada sobre qual o princípio mais importante do ATS, Megha responde: Esta é uma pergunta difícil. Eu acho que a alegria de sentir o poder é o núcleo da experiência dessa dança para mim. A fim de chegar lá, temos que nos tornar confiante nas nossas capacidades e tão confortáveis com a técnica da dança que não se pense conscientemente sobre isso enquanto estamos dançando. O senso de comunidade e confiança também é de vital importância. Nós só podemos conseguir essas coisas por ser cometido, humilde e vulnerável. Há tantos fatores envolvidos que é difícil para mim definir um princípio "mais importante".
Dica de Megha, para nossa comunidade brasileira que engatinha nos passos do ATS: Como uma comunidade iniciante meu conselho seria ficar comprometida e tentar encontrar a alegria de dançar os passos básicos e formações. Não se apresse para fazer todas as novas etapas ou chegar a novas ideias. Fique ligado com a nave-mãe e continue a explorar a beleza dos fundamentos da nossa dança e essa comunidade global incrível.
