Vamos a Terri...

Comentários: PRONTO SUA AULA DO TT TÁ NO PAPO!!!! Eba...

Pilares - O ATS mudou minha vida.

Ela me encorajou a fazer o TT e eu sou eternamente grata.

No dia seguinte, liguei pra ela e plantei a ideia.
Terri e Lisa -  ATS Homecoming 2015

I'm in the anxiety of the countdown, and you ? As promised today we know more about Terri Alred, Sister Stúdio, creator and host of the ATS Homecoming and that will bring us much knowledge about the 2016 event. Now, if your case is only studying the ATS and want to learn more about this style, this interview is also for you.  We split into 3 parts ok , the material just great and I believe that should be tasted !!! Terri begins already saying how you should prepare your lesson , do not miss !!!

"I began dancing when I was old enough to walk, I studied ballet, jazz, modern and dance line.  Dance was a huge part of my life until I graduated from college.  At that point, there weren’t adult dance classes as readily available as there are now.  Twelve years ago I was in an unfortunate accident.  I was attending a professional soccer game when a ball hit me in the head going about 60 miles per hour.  I was thrown into the stands and suffered from a mild traumatic brain injury.  The result of my brain injury was dizziness, balance problems, migraines, neck and back pain and difficulty concentrating.  Even the most basic physical therapy was hard for me, so my physical therapist suggested that I try a dance class.  She was hoping the music and social interactions would distract me from the discomfort and dizziness of moving my head and eyes around.  I found a belly dance class at a local community center that was close to my house.  At first, I could only dance for about 5-10 minutes before I would have to sit down in the back of the room, but I continued trying.  Eventually I was able to make it for a full hour and then for multiple classes.

I wasn’t able to work still because of limitations in functioning from my head injury, so instead, I immersed myself into belly dance.  I studied all forms that I could find including Egyptian, Turkish, Lebanese, Persian, Folkloric, Tribal Fusion and American Tribal Style®.  I also studied Polynesian, Hula, Indian and Bollywood.  Ultimately, after dancing professionally as an Egyptian cabaret dancer, I decided to move exclusively to American Tribal Style®.  I love the costuming, improvisational nature and community.

I opened my own dance studio in Rochester, MN, USA about 6 years ago where I teach and perform.  Almost two years ago, I began working at FatChanceBellyDance, Inc. as a business consultant for Carolena Nericcio-Bohlman. In that capacity, I have helped create and implement the new programs for Sister Studios including the Sister Studio Continuing Education and Advanced Teacher Training.  I also created and had the pleasure of hosting ATS® Homecoming.  In addition to consulting on dance and business related projects, I am also helping to launch the new ATS® Magazine that will be published this May." (Terri)

We're just a few days away from Carolena and Megha's arrival to Brazil, excitement takes over and so does the sense of responsibility. 43 dancers are taking TT and applying for the Sister Studio status afterwards. What would you tell these dancers? Any piece of advice? Teacher Training is such a unique opportunity. How often does a dancer get to study with the founder and creative designer of an entire dance movement?  In order to get the most from your experience, I suggest studying the ATS® movements in advance.  You will be able to get the most from your experience if you are refining movements that you already know rather than trying to learn new movements.  Since each participant will be teaching several movements to others, I also suggest practicing teaching to dance friends if you haven’t ever taught before.  Carolena and Megha will ask you to follow a specific format for teaching and it helps if you have rehearsed it so that you will be more relaxed.  Prior to taking my TT, I got together with a group of women and we practiced teaching and learning from each other.  Just a hint, the format is:
1.  Demonstrate the move (from front and back if you don’t have a mirror)
2.  Describe how to do the move beginning with what the feet do, then moving to the body, arms and head.
3.  Lead a drill of the move.
4.  Ask the class to continue to drill the move (and move around providing corrections and feedback)

Easy!

ATS changed my life. From the first time I saw the formations, the costumes, the fact that there's not only one star but a constellation of dancers, that's what defined my love for this dance form. What do you think that matters the most in this dance: learning technique or dancing from the heart only, disregarding technique? That is such a great question.  Technique is the foundation, but passion makes the dance come alive.  You need the base technique in order to be a dancer, but passion creates a performer.

How has the Sister Studio certification changed your life? I was an Egyptian cabaret dancer who studied ATS® when I made the decision to seek my Sister Studio certification.  I was in Milwaukee, WI, USA with Jenn Nolan (founder of Tamarind) when I was deciding whether to do it or not.  It was a lot of money, and at that point I hadn’t found the freedom within the structure of ATS® yet. She encouraged me to take the training and I have been forever grateful to her.  The ATS® community is welcoming and supportive. I have made friends all around the world and am now teaching and traveling.
Becoming a Sister Studio made my dance journey more legitimate.  Being able to share that certification has opened doors in my business and professionally.  Most importantly, it helped me to find “my people” with whom I resonate and connect at a deep level.

I've watched all I could from ATS HomeComing, we interviewed the only Brazilian sister studio to attend the event and it made me eager to be there,  so I've already registered for the 2016 edition. Can you tell us a little bit about the experience of organizing the first all-ATS event?
When I began working with Carolena, she had recently gotten married and wanted to be in San Francisco more.  As I was creating our strategic plan to grow FCBD® while still enabling her to be home more, I had a dream about ATS® Homecoming.  The next day I called her and pitched the idea.  She liked it but was skeptical about whether we could find a place in the very expensive San Francisco to host such an event, whether anyone would come and whether we could pull it off with me living across the country.
However, Carolena is nothing if not a visionary, so we began!  We found a hotel, publicized the event and sold out in 2 days.  That certainly answered Carolena’s question about whether anyone would want to come.  Our philosophy from the beginning was that we wanted people to have the experience of visiting Carolena at home, with a welcoming hospitality.  I made sure that the wonderful team of volunteers were people who would treat all of the attendees as if they were personal guests in their own home.  We wanted the experience to be the absolute best and most welcoming conference experience ever.

She also wanted to provide extraordinary dance education.  At that point, she had just introduced the concept of “movement dialect” the unique expressions that evolve geographically from region to region or troupe to troupe.  We invited some leaders in movement dialect from around the US along with the favorite FCBD® instructors to provide the workshops.
I was sick with nerves and worry prior to the event starting. I had many problems with the hotel prior to arriving in San Francisco.  However, as soon as the first guests began arriving, everything was fabulous.  It was one of the best experiences of my life.  I was so honored to have had the opportunity to help bring such an amazing and vibrant event together.  I was thrilled to meet folks I had only interacted with on line.  I was delighted that Carolena has so much fun and loved it so much.

What can we expect from the next edition of ATS HomeComing? I may be even more excited about next year than I was about the first year.  We have moved to a new hotel. We will be the ONLY group booked into that hotel utilizing their conference spaces so it will truly be a Tribal Village!  We asked the instructors to create workshops that were unique, innovative and exciting, and they did!  We have added more vending, a large opening reception with an open dance hafla and a poster session where dancers will be able to share all of the exciting things that they are doing around the world.  We have also added a business track with workshops on ethics, communication and of course, Tribal Counsel with Carolena.

This blog started when we first heard Carolena and Megha were coming to Brasil. Our project was to rescue the legacy of tribal bellydance, starting with Jamila Salimpour. Do you believe that studying theory is as important as dancing (performing and training)for a thorough formation?

Yes, absolutely.  I have read literally everything I could get my hands on regarding the history, both modern and ancient, of belly dance.  I have studied with as many teachers representing as many styles as I could possibly access. I have watched hours of video.  I believe that you can only fully understand the current manifestation of our dance by exploring the rich legacy of our history.  Particularly for those who are taking TT and planning on teaching, it is essential to provide the context of the dance to your students.  I love being able to explain the evolution of a movement and the history of the dance traditions that informed it.  In addition, from a practical standpoint, I believe it gives me an edge in the competitive market of instructing locally and internationally.  I know my history and theory and how it informs current practice.  I can explain where movements came from and how the dance has evolved.

How do you feel about the aesthetic pressure among dancers, and do you feel this pressure among ATS dancers? (Please let me know if I misunderstood this question, I am happy to re-write an answer if I have!)
One of the things that attracted me to ATS® as a dance form was the acceptance of beauty in all shapes, sizes, ages and colors.  In cabaret dance, there is a very stereotypical body shape that can be successful professionally.  In ATS® the costumes are flattering to all sizes and shapes of dancers and the community is accepting of many forms of beauty.  That is essential to me.  I actually had an experience when I was still doing some cabaret dance where a local TV charity telethon didn’t want my dancers to perform because there were dancers who were larger that the “ideal” woman.  A local dancer shared the story on a Facebook feed and then other dancers began to slam my students because of their physical appearance. It was a painful and horrible experience.  That was really the turning point for me to leave the cabaret world and immerse myself into ATS® completely.  I also took the experience and made something beautiful out of it.  I wrote a book, “I Belly Dance Because: The Transformative Power of Dance” to celebrate dancers of all sizes, shapes and styles.

Do you study other dance forms?
Yes, as I said before, I have.  However, I do want to add a bit more here.  When I first started studying ATS® there was a pretty large contingency of dancers within the community that suggested that it was better to only study ATS®.  I strongly disagree.  My experience as a dancer and performer has been greatly enhanced by studying as many styles of dance and belly dance as was possible.  I recently took ballroom dance with my partner and that has even helped in my belly dance!

Do you still feel de need to study ATS and take classes even though you're such an experienced dancer? Yes and always.  There is always something to improve, always a new way to think about a movement.  I love taking beginning classes from other instructors and pretending to be a new student again, looking at the posture and movements from a new angle.  I love taking classes from the FatChanceBellyDance instructors for sure and do at every available opportunity.  However, I also feel there is a lot to learn form taking classes from folks who are outside of San Francisco.  Each teacher has a unique story to tell.  Maybe I don’t learn any new earth shattering insights on how to do a taxeem, but maybe I will learn a great new illustration to use while I am teaching.

Tomorrow has more
