PILARES ENTREVISTA- TERRI ALLRED - PARTE II

Continuing our conversation with this incredible person, we will continue the chat. I was thinking, reflecting ... on what we read yesterday and resonates the following: ... the honor of studying with the person who designed the ATS ....  is fantastic. Feeling the "weight" of the day ending, Carolena coming and the time I had to study, which in my view was just ... needed three years to feel safe for this course.
Happy reading!

Even though ATS started as a dance for women, more and more men are being drawn to it. They're learning, teaching, performing and rocking ATS! What do you think about male ATS dancers?  The basic principles of ATS® are community, respect and collaboration. Anyone is welcome to be a part of that.  For me, it isn’t a male or female thing, but rather a human principle of love and acceptance. ATS® movements, costuming and aesthetic are accessible to men and women.  I am a strong feminist and believe language creates reality, so I welcome the Sister and Brother Studios!

When I hear zilling it's like an invitation, it's like it says "join us". What tips would you give to begginers on the technique of playing zills while dancing? I learned to zill in the context of Egyptian dance. The patterns and rhythms are much more complex than in ATS®.  When I started studying ATS®, I couldn’t believe how simple the rhythms were!  However, I know that I am in the minority.  Many people are intimidated by playing a musical instrument and dancing at the same time.   For this reason, they avoid doing it.  The biggest tip I can offer is to begin playing your zills in class at every opportunity (even if you don’t sound very good!).  I suggest getting a wonderful set of wooden zills from FCBD® if you are self-conscious because they don’t make as much noise.  In addition, when I was learning, I just practiced the basic pattern while I was standing still at home until I didn’t have to think about it any more.  Then, I added walking while zilling.  Then I added arm movements.  Finally, walking and arm movements together.  The next step was to add music and play to the rhythm of the music.  I video taped myself and realized that I wasn’t doing as well as I had thought!  Ultimately, I was able to dance and zill because I had practiced so much at home.  My family wanted to ask me to leave, but it really made a huge difference.

In all of the HomeComing videos it's possible to see  the joy in sharing these moments on everyone's face, nevertheless it must be intimidating to dance for an audience of so many amazing women who have perfect dance technique. How can one deal with such pressure? It would be interesting to talk to other dancers about this too, but I actually felt more alive and in the “zone” performing at Homecoming that I normally do when performing to a non-dance audience.  Prior to the shows, there had been many opportunities for connection and interaction.  I was intimidated before I arrived at the event, but once I was there and began to get to know some of my dance heroes and meet other dancers, I didn’t feel nearly as nervous.  It is hard to explain, but I felt so much love and support when I was up on that stage, it was powerful and truly overwhelming.  I am actually tearing up just thinking about it.  I looked into the audience and saw faces of dancers who I knew well and who I had just met and their expressions all said the same thing.  “We are here in this space to support you and honor your gift.”  I truly felt that.  I am very sensitive to energy, and can perceive negative and judgmental energy, even in a large crowd.  I just didn’t feel any of it.  I only felt support.  It was an incredible honor and a peak experience for me.  So, I guess my suggestion for those who plan to dance next year, is to trust in yourself and in your sisters and brothers in dance.  They won’t let you down.

Here in Brazil we have great access to local handicrafted products, but it's not as easy for us to find kuchi belts and such... do you think it's ok for us to adapt the Dress Code using those local handicrafted products? Oh yes, I think it is a beautiful idea and really essential to making the dance your own.  As long as you stay within the overall ATS® aesthetic, personalizing your costuming with local handicrafts will allow you to express the unique and valuable voice of your own culture.  I can’t wait to see

What is indispesable for a solid formation? I think the most important aspect of keeping formations solid is to be connected with the other dancers.  If you aren’t aware of the dancers around you, then it is really easy to lose formation.  It is great to get lost in the thrill of performance, but this dance is ultimately, a social dance where each of us must be aware of those around us.
